Dave Tomkin FIGEM – H21 (Hydrogen) System Modelling Engineer at Northern Gas Networks
Speaking at – H21 & Hydrogen Homes Project Update
Hydrogen could play a major role in the future of gas networks, but what does this mean for the domestic properties and the installer?
Northern Gas Networks (NGN) are leading on the H21 programme to find out the suitability of the existing natural gas infrastructure to distribute 100% hydrogen, which is taking place through a number of projects, seeking to deliver this safety critical evidence.
In addition to the H21 project, NGN along with partners Cadent and BEIS have built two semi-detached homes at NGN’s Low Thornley site in Gateshead, where for the first time in the UK the homes are using 100% hydrogen for heating and cooking (including boilers, hobs, cookers and fires). There are developed by leading manufacturers for the BEIS Hy4Heat programme and are being showcased on site to visitors.
The talk will be delivered by IGEM member David Tomkin who works on the H21 projectfor NGN.
This presentation will provide an update on the Phases of the H21 project, the Hydrogen Homes project, and NGN’s hydrogen village trial, which is a proposal for 1,000-2,000 properties and additional developments at the Low Thornley site.
BAXI Heating will also be bringing a demonstration model of their new hydrogen ready boiler to display.
This session will also include a brief introduction to IGEM. IGEM is the professional engineering institution for gas, we’re here to support individuals and organisations connected with the gas sector.
IGEM will be exhibiting at the show on stand J160, over the three days, we’ll be on hand to talk to visitors about how IGEM and our standards are supporting their work and adapting to change as the industry transitions towards net zero.

Dave Bendle, EngTech MIGEM – Chair, Unsafe Situations Committee
Speaker at –The Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (IGEM G/11): Explained by those that write itA new edition of the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP) IGEM/G/11 was released earlier this year. Find out from those who write the standard how it assists engineers with their legal requirements and what has changed.
IGEM/G/11 is created by a panel who work within the gas industry for those in the gas industry. This is an opportunity to hear from the IGEM members and staff who write the document.
Chair of the panel, Dave Bendle, will explain how IGEM/G/11 supports engineers in being compliant with their duties under both the Health & Safety at Work etc Act and the Gas Safety Installation and Use Regulations.
He will demonstrate the risk assessment approach the panel uses in classifying scenarios used in IGEM/G/11, addressing common myths along the way.
The presentation will also provide a brief overview of the Procedure’s history and how it has evolved into the current version. This will include the removal of NCS and the rationale behind the core safety messaging to customers and gas users regardless of the classification. Recent updates will be highlighted along with their reason for inclusion and revision.IGEM member Dave Bendle spent over 40 years with British Gas, starting off an apprentice and recently took early retirement. At British Gas he was responsible for gas technical standards and incident investigation. Dave has been involved in the Unsafe Situations Procedure for over 15 years and is the current Chair of IGEM/G/11.
There will also be an opportunity to buy the latest Gas Safety Book, by Gas Safety Shop, that incorporates the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP) IGEM/G/11 from Viper Gas’ stand J40.

Steve Critchlow FIGEM – Principal Gas Engineer at Health & Safety Executive
Speaker at – RIDDOR Demystified: What it covers and what are your duties?RIDDOR is a law that applies to all gas installers and engineers and is one that you need to be fully aware of and compliant with.Get the facts and dismiss the rumours you may have heard about the reporting of injury, disease and dangerous occurrence regulations (RIDDOR).
RIDDOR requires all employers to report work related accidents and ill health to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), and holds some specific, and unique, requirements for the gas industry.
IGEM member Steve Critchlow will provide this presentation. He will explain why reporting and recording are legal requirements and why accurate reporting benefits everyone. He’ll also address common misunderstandings in the sector and your responsibilities, as well as outlining the role of the HSE in the gas industry.
Steve is a Principal Gas Engineer at the Science Division of the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) where he has worked for over 20 years. In this role he has been responsible for investigating most serious gas related incidents in the UK and is frequently used to provide expert evidence in court.
As well as being a Gas Safe Registered engineer, Steve holds a Master of Science degree in Gas engineering. Steve is a Fellow member of IGEM and sits on the IGEM/G/11 Unsafe Situations panel and the panel for the GL/8 standard, the investigation of gas related incidents.
