
John Thompson is a qualified plumber and Building Services Design Engineer who has extensive experience in the plumbing & heating industry which commenced with an apprenticeship in plumbing & heating in the family business.
John became interested in progressing a career in education & training through a part-time teaching role at the local college, which led him to take up a post within the Training & Technical Department of the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC) in the early 1990’s. He was promoted to the role of Training & Technical Manager in 1997 with responsibility for overseeing the Association’s training and technical functions. He has project managed and worked on numerous education and training projects including plumbing occupational standards and qualifications development leading to the production of awarding /certifying body supporting assessment and learning solutions through organisations such as BPEC and City & Guilds. He has managed the development of a number of internal projects within APHC related to its membership schemes which have led to Government approval as a Water Regulations Approved Contractor Scheme and Building Regulations Competent Persons Scheme. He is a published author having written a number of publications that predominantly support new entrant learning in plumbing & heating.
John has gained significant experience in trade body and industry matters which led to his appointment with APHC as Chief Executive Officer in late 2011. He now takes responsibility for delivering the operational plans of the business and strategic development of the organisation via its board of directors.
John is very passionate about plumbing and heating matters and takes great pride in his family roots in the industry which go back to the late 18th century. Married with 2 children he devotes what spare time that’s left as a Listening Volunteer with the Samaritans.
