As the Chief Executive of the Builders Merchants Federation, John Newcomb leads a trade association that represents a significant part of the nation’s economy, with 900 members who together have combined sales of over £44.5bn and employ over 206,000 people. In post since 2012, during his tenure, John has overseen the introduction of initiatives that have broadened the relevance, appeal and influence of the building materials industry, and overseen exceptional member growth to secure the BMF’s position as a leading voice in UK industry. John was also appointed as a member of the Construction Leadership Council’s Construction Industry Taskforce in 2020, and has played a key role in working with government and trade bodies representing the whole construction ecosystem to coordinate the industry’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and keep the critical components of the building materials supply chain operating. In recognition of the positive impact of his work with the CLC, in particular his determination to keep the industry operating safely to support the national effort, John was named by the Business Leader Magazine as one of 32 top Business Heroes during the COVID crisis. Further accolades followed, with a Silver Award for Outstanding Leadership at the COVID Response Awards, 2021. At the same awards, the BMF’s approach to the pandemic, directed by John, was recognised with the Best Covid-19 Response In Associations’ award. Weeks earlier, the BMF team also secured the Best Membership Support During COVID-19 at the Association Excellence Awards. Further afield, John plays a key role in the direction of the industry at an international level and is the current President of UFEMAT, the European trade body for the merchant industry. He is also a Liveryman ofthe Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants and the Worshipful Company of Marketors. John is a former vice-chair of the Construction Product Association’s executive committee and was on the board of the Trade Association Forum (TAF) for six years. He received TAF’s prestigious Leadership Award in 2019. John holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Bradford Management Centre. Prior to joining the BMF, he held senior Marketing, Commercial and Managing Director roles within the DIY and housewares industry, and maintained a 15-year involvement with BHETA, the British Home Enhancement Trade Association, the last two years as President. John was also nominated for Chief Executive of the Year at the Association Awards UK in 2015 and 2016 and the IoD Director of the Year Awards 2017. He was one of 3 finalists in the Association Awards UK 2021 Executive Director of the Year category.
