Derek started as a teacher of science subjects to A level in secondary school and later teaching of vocational sciences in further education. He then moved into management in the food and retail sectors where he retained a strong interest in people development and vocational training. He pursued this interest by taking posts in a Trade Association and then as Chief Officer in a National Training Organisation. Continuing his vocational interests, he became a Director in a Sector Skills Council responsible for vocational qualifications, apprenticeships and careers pathways. This role facilitated his next move into the world of regulated examination bodies, where he has been a Director and Responsible Officer for three vocational Awarding Organisations. Additionally, Derek has been both an Ofsted Inspector and an External Quality Assurer of vocational training. He is currently Quality Director at Achieve+Partners Ltd, an organisation that provides End-point Assessment services for Apprenticeship Standards in the furniture, wood and related supply chain occupations.
