Unified Water Label Association Q&A

We caught up with the UWLA to talk about all things water efficiency.

Your recently published manifesto sets out the vision for the future. What are the key aims?

The Unified Water Label Association aims to maintain its position as a leader in the water efficiency space, supporting manufacturers and channels to market in their development of products, which deliver on performance but have the potential to use less water.

Our role is to educate and inform to gain greater visibility in the marketplace, to raise awareness via our comprehensive database of flow and flush rates, and grow the number of companies registered on the Unified Water Label database.

How close are you to universal adoption of the Unified Water Label across Europe?

We are quite close, with market penetration around 75%, and a focused programme of activities with our European partners, we are raising awareness and bringing in new supporters every week.

Market transition is happening as these statistics from the Unified Water Label database illustrate:

  • 80% of basin taps registered are in the most efficient band
  • 60% of kitchen taps deliver no more than 8 litres per minute
  • 72% of showers deliver less than 10 litres per minute
  • Over 90% of WCs are sold as dual flush

How are you promoting the Unified Water Label to both installers and consumers?

The Unified Water Label is reaching out at all levels to influence not just installers and consumers but across all market sectors. Current initiatives include:

  • Competitions and workshops in primary schools
  • Curriculum content for further education colleges, targeting plumbing apprenticeships and trainees
  • Showroom pack for KBB retailers
  • Water Matters film for installers and retailers
  • Communication campaign across KBB industry

What can visitors expect from you at this year’s InstallerSHOW?

We will be launching our animated Water Matters film for installers at InstallerSHOW. This has been designed to help installers understand the important role they can play in water efficiency, and how they can influence consumers to become water conscious and reduce water waste.

We will also demonstrate that the Unified Water Label is a perfect solution and how it has already influenced market transformation.

Sustainability and water efficiency agenda is high on the political agenda, for whatever government is in place and the InstallerSHOW is the perfect opportunity to engage with installers, sharing our vision and demonstrating the tools we have to help them inspire and educate their customers.
