SolarEdge Q&A

Jason Kirrage, Senior Technical Marketing Manager – UK at SolarEdge, gives us an overview of the company’s products and plans for InstallerSHOW 2024.

How much do the efficiencies and capabilities of solar inverters vary across the market, and what sets your products apart?
Efficiency, or rather percentage, really depends on what the numbers are to start with. As SolarEdge Power Optimizer gives one MPPT per module, rather than one per inverter, it allows each module to produce as much power as it can regardless of its location or neighbour on the string. A traditional inverter with an MPPT at the inverter would work on the lowest power produced on the modules connected to the same string. As we have the SolarEdge inverter, and Power Optimizer which can produce more power from the module than a traditional inverter can, SolarEdge has a clear advantage and an efficiency of 98.8 (European weighted efficiency) – whereas a traditional inverter with the same efficiency would produce less power. As the SolarEdge inverter and Power Optimizer can produce more power, and is capable of harnessing more production/generation, it can also be oversized to 200% (7360 watts on a 3680 watt inverter). With the SolarEdge Home Battery 400V, which connects directly to the inverter at the same DC voltage as the PV strings, this oversizing of 3680watts can go directly into the battery, again with very little losses as the voltage is the same. A traditional inverter is limited to around 138%, and with an AC coupled battery would need to change from DC to AC, then to DC, for the battery to charge, and then DC to AC to discharge. Bear in mind that the 38% extra power from the modules is clipped/lost forever, as the inverter is only rated at 3680 watts.

To what extent does utilising the right software have an impact on home energy use, and how important is it to ensure that third party products are compatible with it?
Using the SolarEdge (Residential) One, you are able to create a personal profile to meet your needs, information is taken external data sources (dynamic utility prices) internal data sources (consumption, battery state of energy, PV generation) and the homeowners’ preferences, and use these to generate a 24-hour profile that will provide optimum energy savings. What is even more important is the ability track the dynamic tariffs and react to these. SolarEdge One also has the ability to control third party batteries, EV chargers, heat pumps, and smart devices in general. This allows even more savings, as the SolarEdge One can control both SolarEdge and third party products, giving greater control and savings to the homeowner.

Are we likely to see a scenario where direct charging reduces the need for battery storage on a significant scale in micro grid set-ups?
I would expect to see the opposite, with a large-scale battery setup and grid monitoring at the substations – ensuring that each home with PV contributes to the micro grid, and excess charges the batteries.

What can visitors expect to see from you at this year’s InstallerSHOW?
A great demonstration of how to install, wire, and commission the SolarEdge Home products, Inverter, Power Optimizer, battery, backup interface, EV charger, and smart devices, and an even better presentation explaining the benefits of SolarEdge Technologies – and safety, including SafeDC, AFCI, and Sense Connect.
