Segen Q&A

We caught up with Elizabeth Cammack, VP Sales and Advisor to the Global Board at Segen, to talk about the company’s 20th anniversary, the value of training, and its plans for this year’s InstallerSHOW.

Elizabeth Cammack
VP Sales and Advisor to the Global Board

This year marks two decades since you were founded in the UK. What changes have you seen in that time, and how are you celebrating this milestone?
Our 20th anniversary celebrations started at this year’s Segen Showcase. This annual event is an opportunity for us and our key manufacturers to say thank you to Segen customers, always at an unusual and coveted secret venue. This year, we took 250 guests to a private island for networking, product and industry updates, and a memorable festival-style party.

Segen was founded by Andy Pegg in 2004 and was originally an installation business. With the creation of the Segen Design Tool and Portal in 2010, the company re-invented itself as the leading Solar PV Wholesale Distributor it is today. The UK market has professionalised significantly in that time, although the ‘boom and bust’ nature of the industry still tends to attract unscrupulous fly-by-night sales companies and organisations like Segen must play a role in assisting professional, quality, installers to succeed. One thing that has not changed is my concern for the industry’s reputation.

Product innovation is moving continuously at such a fast pace, which has opened so much more usable space for solar PV and energy storage. And of course, the electrification of our way of life, combined with a wider appreciation of the need to move away from fossil fuels makes talking about solar deployment a relevant and exciting topic for a much wider audience. I am not such a social pariah these days!

How does your Design Tool help to take away some of the legwork for installers?
The Segen Design Tool was ahead of its time and is still used by most of the market. It provides our customers with a quick way to build an accurate and specific bill of materials/quotation, which can then quickly be converted to an order when the installer and their customer site are ready. With 24/7 access, the tool allows Segen customers to access bespoke designs without any waiting time and it locks in prices for 30 days. This price guarantee removes some of the uncertainty in what can be a very turbulent marketplace. The designs can be postcode-specific, use wind loading and irradiance data, and align with MCS requirements.

We appreciate that our customers have many different preferences in the way they sell, design, and order, so our online tools are evolving. The next addition and highly anticipated partnership with OpenSolar will bring a whole new level of design, sales, and ordering ability to our customers.

What developments have there been in your training provision?
We are delighted to announce that our state-of-the-art purpose-built training academy will be opening its doors to our customers in the coming months. Segen will offer a range of innovative, accredited courses, delivered on-site at our academy in Medway, Kent. The Segen Academy will equip individuals with the necessary skills and expertise required to excel in the renewable energy industry. We believe that by investing in education and training, we can contribute to the growth and sustainability of the sector. We are passionate about making a difference and supporting our customer base.

Are there plans in place to broaden the range of products you offer?
Yes, we will add heat pumps to our portfolio in the second half of 2024 and expand our commercial product line. Segen prides itself on being at the forefront of product innovation. We select our manufacturing partners carefully and with them we make sure Segen customers have first access to the products we deem to be the most innovative and reliable.

What do you have in store for visitors to InstallerSHOW?
The most important aspect of Segen’s presence is your visitors’ access to our Team. I can confidently say that their combined experience, knowledge, and skills are without compare. Time at our booth will be time well spent. It is one of the few places you can access informed industry insight, plus accurate updates on key manufacturers such as Solis, Fox ESS, Tesla Powerwall, GivEnergy, Renusol, Pylon, and JA Solar. Visitors will also be able to find out more about our Academy and how to become a Segen customer.

Of course, we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary with cupcakes and coffee throughout the three days, plus beer, prosecco, and networking from 3.30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. We are keen to welcome existing customers and new ones to our stand.
