How installers can prepare for EV Smart Charge Regulations

ev.energy is the leader in EV Smart Charging, with over 70,000 drivers using their smart
charging app, and a range of business solutions to help everyone get smart with their
energy.

As an increasing number of drivers transition to electric vehicles (EVs), new rules are being
implemented to protect consumers and prevent the national energy system from being
overwhelmed, and the UK is at the forefront of this change.

From the 30th June 2022, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy will
introduce The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. This new
legislation will require all EV Charge Points sold in Great Britain (England, Scotland and
Wales) to have “smart charging” functionality and there are fines of up to £10,000 for those
found selling non-compliant devices.

In simple terms, smart charging functionality connects EV Charge Points with a management
platform over the Internet, enabling the platform to optimise charging for the cheapest and
greenest times, while also protecting the energy grid from higher demand at peak times.
From 30th December 2022, there will be another set of requirements added to the
regulations which focus on physical and cyber security.

The Smart Charge Regulations may feel like a burden, however, there is a silver lining.
Smarter, connected EV Charge Points will enable installers to commission devices faster,
spend less time on-site and manage customer queries remotely. Ultimately, this will enable
increased efficiency and more installs every day.

How to get ready

As the rules apply at the point of sale, they will impact EV charger installers who buy devices
from manufacturers or distributors and resell to consumers or businesses. Here are some
practical steps you can take to get ready now.

  • Shift or upgrade existing EV Charge Point stock before 30th June 2022
  • Ensure all new EV Charge Points you’re buying from a wholesaler are fully compliant
    with the regulations
  • Research the regulations to understand what is and isn’t covered
  • Plan ahead for additional requirements from 30th December 2022

As leaders in EV smart charging, ev.energy can help you to understand evolving regulations,
find compliant EV Charge Points, train your team and get support with technical questions.

You can find ev.energy at the Installer Show at the NEC Birmingham from the 21st-23rd
June 2022.
