Grundfos Q&A

We caught up with Neal Saunders from Grundfos ahead of InstallerSHOW 2024 to talk about diversity, sustainability, and much more.

Neal Saunders
Grundfos

You’re partnering with Installer and InstallerSHOW on a campaign to shine a light on women in the industry. What has driven you to champion diversity and inclusion in this way?
Diversity and inclusion are at the core of Grundfos values, and we see great benefits in a diverse workforce. Also, as more women are working as installers, we want to help build on that momentum, and make sure that we talk about this, and we help to create atmosphere that fosters this diverse workforce and is a friendly place where anyone can thrive. Installer has given us a fantastic platform to talk about things that Grundfos is focusing on and to shed light on the fact that it is in everyone’s interest to encourage both women and young students to explore the industry that has so much to offer. We couldn’t be more proud to partner with InstallerSHOW and are looking forward to our panel discussion on 27th June in the Climate Solutions Theatre, where everyone will have the opportunity to come and listen to the women of the industry as well as those who are champions of them – from Angela Rushforth, MD of Toolstation to Sophie Maguire, a last year apprentice, Zoë Tanner and Celia Matthews from HIP, Jerry Whiteley from CIPHE, our own Becky Shuck, and Karen Boot, gas engineer and owner of Kaz Gas. It will be a great discussion and a fantastic networking experience for all, so it is definitely one to add to your day!

The development of energy efficient pumps has been an integral part of improving the wider environmental credentials of appliances. How are you complementing this with sustainability initiatives as an organisation?
One of the ways is through our Grundfos Take Back program, an initiative aimed at both environmental conservation and social impact.

The program encourages installers, wholesalers, and individuals to return their used pumps to Grundfos. These obsolete pumps are then recycled to the highest possible percentage.

By recycling end-of-life circulator pumps (such as ALPHA, UP, COMFORT, MAGNA, and SCALA), Grundfos minimises waste and contributes to a more sustainable production process. The materials and components are disassembled manually to maximise recyclable material recovery.

We don’t stop there. We raise awareness with campaigns like 200 million possibilities, where we shed light on the impact of replacing old inefficient circulators with new energy efficient pumps. Inefficient circulators are the third highest consumers of electricity in homes, just behind freezers and tumble dryers. And right now, 200 million older pumps that provide heating to homes and buildings around the world are wasting energy. Replacing them could save the equivalent of Portugal’s annual electricity consumption!

How successful has the Grundfos GO app been in assisting installers with replacement pump selection?
We all know how precious time is in the life of an installer and we want to help by offering tools that can take some pressure off their busy day. With that in mind, the Grundfos GO app has been created so installers can be more efficient and able to identify the right pump replacement within seconds. From boiler pump replacement and standalone pump replacement pre ERP, the Grundfos GO app has 14,000+ within its database and it goes hand in hand with our UPS3. With UPS3 being flexible enough to use in almost any heating application, installers will always have the right pump on their van.

What is the latest on your training offering, both online and in-person?
We have some fantastic news when it comes to learning! Building on the popularity of Grundfos Ecademy, a free 24/7 online training tool with an ever growing catalogue of online courses, it’s felt natural to also give installers opportunity to train with us in person and have that hands-on experience with our products. We are so happy to announce that we are launching Grundfos Pump School for face-to-face interactions with installers and students alike, where they will have the opportunity to ask questions and have access to courses developed by our Product Engineers based at our Headquarters in Bjerringboro, Denmark – or as we like to call it, the world’s pump capital. From heating to boosting, the courses will cover our extensive product portfolio and will help installers gain more pump knowledge. Conveniently located in three parts of the country, Grundfos Pump School will open its doors in July. Make sure you come and see us at InstallerSHOW to be the first to sign up!
