Efficient & sustainable: Why more homes are turning to heat pumps

UK households purchased record numbers of heat pumps in 2025, underscoring a clear shift in how UK households are choosing to heat their homes. As more consumers embrace renewable technologies, efficiency and comfort are becoming top priorities in home‑energy decisions. For installers, this changing landscape is impossible to ignore, demand is rising, conversations are happening, and a growing sector means more opportunity.

So, what do heat pumps have to offer the consumer? Heat pumps deliver a consistent, stable temperature throughout the home, ensuring comfort isn’t compromised. Heat pumps can reduce a home's carbon footprint by up to 70% when compared with a gas boiler. They also make the owner less reliant on imported fossil fuels and help protect against price shocks when supply is interrupted. By avoiding burning fuel altogether, air quality is dramatically improved in and around the property. Lastly, heat pumps are around three times more energy‑efficient than traditional boilers and allow homeowners to take advantage of smart tariffs. Significant energy cost savings can be made through smart tariffs when heat pumps are combined with other green technologies such as improved insulation, solar, and home batteries.

For many customers, the practical side matters just as much as the long-term gains. Air source heat pumps require a small outdoor space for the external unit. Many homes already meet the insulation levels needed to support a heat pump with studies suggesting around 90% of UK homes are suitable - though better insulation always helps to reduce overall running costs of the home.

Noise is a concern installers are often asked about. Karen Burn, who has a heat pump in her holiday rental commented, “We live in a very quiet rural area, and the peace of the countryside is really important to us. The noise of the heat pumps is not intrusive; the wind through the surrounding trees is often louder. It's not a continuous noise; a momentary whir, a very gentle background hum for a time and then silence".

The UK Government is currently offering a £7,500 grant (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) to support the cost of installing a heat pump. Many homeowners want a realistic understanding of what installation involves, how the system will perform, and whether it represents a worthwhile investment for their property. While customers don’t apply for the grant themselves, an accredited installer will visit the home to confirm it qualifies and then submit the application on the customer’s behalf via Ofgem. For homes outside England and Wales, installers can access similar financial support through Home Energy Scotland and the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme.

Overall, heat pumps offer an appealing combination of efficiency and comfort. With grants reducing upfront costs, they’re becoming an increasingly popular option worth discussing with owners seeking to future-proof their home. For installers, this momentum signals a clear opportunity to expand into a market that’s only set to grow.
