Blended Products Q&A

Dirk van Lennap, Renewables Specialist at Blended Products, gives us the lowdown on heat transfer fluids.

Heat transfer fluids are an essential element of numerous heating and cooling technologies. Are there dramatic differences in product formulation between those used for heat pumps and solar thermal, for instance?
Uniquely, our Thermablend TX formulation has been designed to perform efficiently in solar thermal, air source heat pump and ground source heat pump applications. We have different formulations for refrigeration/cooling applications – referred to as our Coolblend range.

What are the key quality standards and accreditations to look out for?
We are an ISO 9001 company. Thermablend TX is non-hazardous and the inhibitor meets ASTM D-1384 standards. Viscosity is low (easy to mix and low parasitic pumping loads) and thermal conductivity is relatively high compared to other non-hazardous glycol based heat transfer fluids. We are a member of the Ground Source Heat Pump Association.

How important is consistency of glycol percentage, and what tests do you have in place to ensure reliability and high performance?
Independent test laboratories have tested the viscosity, thermal conductivity and freeze protection levels of our Thermablend TX.  Every shipment that goes out is quality controlled and a sample taken. In order for the inhibitor and biocide to perform, the minimum percentage concentration of Thermablend TX should be 25%. To ensure accurate concentrations, we can offer Thermablend TX pre-diluted with de-mineralised water to the freeze protection level required. Alternatively, the installer/contractor can dilute with water themselves. Our data sheets have the refractometer readings and Thermablend TX % concentrations that installers/contractors should meet for different minus temperature levels.

What can visitors to InstallerSHOW expect to see from you this year?
2023 was a successful event for us, so we are thrilled to be back for the third time! This year, to align with our business strategy, we have moved our range of heat transfer fluids under a new Blended Fluids umbrella, which we are so excited to launch at InstallerSHOW to see how that translates to our customers! We can’t wait to share our products with even more merchants and installers. We have an innovative product line that we constantly evolve, but we are equally interested in learning about the key issues facing the industry.
