5 smart lights to illuminate any bathroom

Britta O’Boyle picks out a selection of bathroom-safe smart lights worth knowing about.
It wasn’t long ago bathrooms were carpeted and filled with more colour than a supermarket sweet aisle. The days of avocado and peach suites may be long gone and (a comeback notwithstanding) they’ve been replaced by clean, white elements that extend beyond sanitaryware – from perfect tiles and furniture to finer details like smart toilets, smart taps and smart lighting.
While smart lighting can be used all over the home, lighting in the bathroom does, of course, need to have a specific IP rating. With that in mind, here are five bathroom-friendly smart lights that can either enhance that clean look or add a splash of colour without stepping back into the 1970s.

Philips Hue Adore
When people talk about smart lighting, Philips Hue is typically the company that first comes to mind – and with good reason. It has been in the smart lighting game a long time, with a much broader portfolio of bulbs than its competitors.
The Adore bathroom recessed downlight won’t turn a bathroom pink, but it can still create an ambience, offering a warm light to cool light spectrum and four different light recipes comprising Energise, Concentrate, Read and Relax. It’s a GU10 LED bulb with a silver fitting, and it can be controlled using a wireless dimmer, the Philips Hue app or voice when paired with Alexa or Google Assistant.

Philips Hue Xamento medium ceiling lamp
Another one from Philips Hue, but this one has the option of colour alongside a white light spectrum. Available in a medium or large size, the Xamento ceiling lamp offers up millions of colours to add a little bit of spice to a bathroom.
It’s an alternative to a spotlight but it still offers a contemporary design and various ways to control, including voice when connected to Alexa or Google Home. If a Philips Bridge is connected, more features are unlocked too, including immersive experiences and away-from-home control to enable customers to set the mood before they return home.

Philips Hue Devere ceiling light
For something a little more traditional, the Devere ceiling light is a good option to consider. There are no purples and greens on offer here, but there are more than 50,000 warm to cool light shades, allowing adjustment based on activities such as applying make-up or winding down for the evening.
Preset light recipes are a feature on the Devere ceiling light, as with the Adore downlight, as are app control and voice control. Like other Philips Hue bathroom lights, when the Devere is connected to a Philips Hue Bridge more features are unlocked so it’s recommended to do this where possible.

Sycamore Aspen 1
In a slightly different take, Sycamore Lighting offers the Aspen 1 ceiling light that has an IP44 rating and three tunable white light settings ranging from warm to cool. There’s no app control or voice control with this ceiling light, with the three light settings selected via a remote.
The Aspen1 does offer a 17W and 6W speaker inside, however, enabling users to stream music from a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth.

HiB Rhythm Ceiling Light
Last but not least, in what amounts to more or less a combination of the Philips Hue options and the Sycamore Lighting option, the HiB Rhythm Ceiling Light has a built-in Bluetooth speaker whilst also offering a spectrum of white light, and red, green and blue hues.
Like the Sycamore Lighting option, there’s no app or voice control, but users can play their favourite tracks, podcasts or audiobooks and use the remote to select their perfect hue, whether cool or warm whites, or a deep blue or red.
