Lessons from India: Plumbing’s Frontline Role in Global Water Challenges
With over four billion people lacking access to clean water, the global water crisis demands urgent, localised action. Yet public awareness of actual water consumption—especially virtual water—remains low. Promoting water-efficient sanitaryware and fixtures, rainwater harvesting, aquifer recharge, wastewater reclamation, and comprehensive audits in the built environment is essential.
This session explores the “glocal” nature of plumbing—where global challenges meet local solutions through professional expertise, community engagement, and infrastructure reform. It highlights India’s Swachh Bharat mission and the Plumbing Professionals League, an NSDC-certified initiative led by the Indian Plumbing Association to address the shortage of skilled professionals. The revival of the River Thames offers a UK-based example of what targeted efforts can achieve. Together, these stories illustrate how plumbing sits at the frontline of environmental resilience and social impact.
