Up to now, most of the focus around building retrofit has been on energy efficiency. This attention is not surprising given the drive for decarbonisation and the high cost of gas and electricity.
However, 2022’s summer drought conditions have put water efficiency on more agendas of policymakers and those working in the built environment.
There is growing pressure on the water industry to sort out large-scale supply leakage and invest in supply infrastructure. However, water scarcity also demands a reduction in domestic water consumption, forming part of the Government’s 25-year environmental plan.
As water fittings suppliers, BMA members are innovating more efficient products continuously. Examples are new-to-market leak-proof toilet flush valves, energy-saving cold start taps and near-to-market recirculating showers.
While this innovation is the lifeblood of the sector, sometimes inertia in the marketplace prevents us from achieving what’s possible. Manufacturers, installers and specifiers must work closely together to keep driving forward.
I’m delighted that BMA is working with the organisers of Installer and Elemental to bring you the bathroom zone at next year’s show. Water scarcity and how we can all collaborate to address the issue will feature prominently in the programme for the event. I look forward to seeing many readers there.
