How does shower waste water heat recovery work?

When showering, you are using water that’s been heated using the building’s water heating system (Combi boiler, Cylinder, Thermal store or Heat Interface Unit). A Waste Water Heat Recovery System (WWHRS) captures heat energy that would normally go down the drain during baths or showers.

By using the residual heat from the waste water, a WWHRS preheats the incoming mains cold water feed. This heat exchange reduces the energy demand from water heaters because the heat energy that would normally go down the drain is being reused. Every shower taken using a WWHRS uses less hot water, has lower CO² emissions and reduces energy costs.
