Department for Education Representative Visits Building Futures Aldridge

Juniper Training’s Building Futures centre in Walsall, Aldridge welcomed Roger Cotes from the Department for Education for an in‑depth visit showcasing the centre’s specialist roofing facilities, innovative training environments and the impact these have on learners from across England.

Roger toured the centre’s purpose-built practical spaces and classrooms with Lesley Holland, Michelle Roberts, and the Building Futures team. As the only facility of its kind in the country, Building Futures provides Study Programme and Apprenticeship learners with hands-on, industry-standard training in a safe environment.

Roger was able to see first-hand how important these facilities are for helping learners succeed and why ongoing funding matters for maintaining high-quality roofing training, which is crucial for addressing skills shortages in construction. He spoke with learners at all stages of their training, from those just starting out to apprentices getting ready for their End-Point Assessment.

Learners shared their experiences, goals, and the connections they've made during their training. An employer partner also took part, emphasising the increasing shortage of skilled workers in roofing and the essential role centres like Building Futures play in developing future professionals. The discussions highlighted that targeted support from the Department for Education could help make these opportunities more accessible and ensure their sustainability over the long term.

As an independent training provider, Juniper Training plays a vital role in giving young people access to specialist skills training. Building Futures attracts learners from all over England, many of whom travel specifically to access the theoretical and practical training available only at this Aldridge centre. This national reach reflects both the necessity and the uniqueness of the provision.

The visit also highlighted the tremendous value of donations from suppliers who provide the materials learners need to practise and master roofing techniques. These contributions directly support learners’ training experiences, enabling hands‑on practice that would not otherwise be possible.

Juniper Training would like to thank Roger Cotes for his time and involvement, along with all the employer partners and suppliers who continue to support the Building Futures mission.
